Karen Holtzblatt has been an admirably effective leader in developing and disseminating Contextual Design, and now her Second Edition strengthens her influence in the design community. She goes beyond user interface design and user experience design, raising the aspiration of readers to embrace Joy in Life (Accomplishment, Connection, Identity and Sensation). Holtzblatt also encourages designers to create products that bring Joy in Use, by which she means “fulfillment of core intents†in just a few actions, while being free of hassles.These lofty goals can be realized by hard work in immersion experiences that give designers an intimate understanding of what users are trying to do and the rich circumstances in which they work or play. As she writes “immersion puts the team in the users’ shoesâ€, so that the team can make effective decisions and clever innovations. Contextual design is a validated set of methods that show how to gather the data that drives ideation, which leads to products that are fulfilling because they empower users and because they fit into the users’ larger ecosystem.My only complaint is that I wanted more examples. The chapter on experience models has 20 large figures, but the affinity diagram chapter only had two.In summary, this is a solid book, based on decades of experience in many commercial projects. It is realistic, while being inspirational. Get it, use it, and help make the world a better place by improved design.
Almost 20 years ago, the first edition of this book was my primary "go-to" for practical advice on conducting user research and using the findings to generate design solutions.The new edition is a complete revamp and addresses the key change that's occurred during that period; namely the ubiquitous nature of "technology as appendage".The models presented are founded in empirical research and are specifically designed to support communication, immersion and interaction.If you are serious about conducting research to design excellent products and services, this book is quite simply a "must-read". At almost 500 pages it's not a light read, but it will more than reward the effort.
